Oil rig blast reported in Gulf of Mexico.
An explosion has reportedly injured dozens of people on an oil rig off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico, a CBS affiliate in New Orleans is reporting. Few details are available.

An oil slick can be seen off the Louisiana coast in this satellite image taken on April 29, 2010, and released April 30. It’s feared the oil, gushing from a sub-sea well that burst after a BP oil rig exploded and sank on April 20, will trigger one of the worst ecological disasters in the U.S. An estimated 800,000 litres of sweet crude oil are roaring into the water every day, and it could take 90 days to stop the leak.

Karzai’s brother calls for U.S. to shore up Kabul Bank.

As depositors thronged branches of Afghanistan’s biggest bank, Mahmoud Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a major shareholder in beleaguered Kabul Bank called on Thursday for intervention by the United States to head off a financial meltdown.

Kabul Bank handles salary payments for soldiers, police and teachers. It has scores of branches across Afghanistan and holds the accounts of key Afghan government agencies. The collapse of the bank would likely spread panic throughout the country’s fledgling financial sector. The hemorrhaging of funds from the bank accelerated on Thursday.

Fed will take action only if economic conditions worsen.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke acknowledges that the pace of the country’s economic growth “recently appears somewhat less vigorous” than expected, but that it is on track to continue growing.

He said the central bank would only take new action if conditions worsen further.
