Chris Christie: Shut Up About Inequality Already!
Topix Staff Feature
In an interview with Piers Morgan yesterday, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie expressed his desire that Warren Buffett and his wealthy peers asking to be taxed more just “write a check and shut up.”
Says Christie:
The fact of the matter is that I’m tired of hearing about it. If he wants to give the government more money, he’s got the ability to write a check. Go ahead and write it.
The Washington Post‘s Greg Sargent is not impressed by Christie’s righteous indignation, suggesting the Garden State Republican get a grip on the logic of a class-based solution to solving society’s problems:
This problem will not be solved if Warren Buffett writes a check. Buffett’s point is that the scale of the problem requires his class as a whole to chip in a bit more to solve it. This won’t happen unless taxes are raised on the very wealthy. Voluntary contributions won’t quite cut it. This requires a society-wide solution.
What do you think? Do you share Christie’s anger at the wealthy asking for more taxes on the wealthy, or is that kind of tax policy exactly what the country needs right now?
